# A breakout on volume

> Build a 20-bar breakout that asks for high volume, for Bitcoin, without code, and backtest it on Binance candles since 2020: what volume changes and what it costs.

A breakout on volume buys when the price breaks its 20-bar high on volume well above the usual for that hour, and sells below the 10-bar low. This recipe builds one for Bitcoin without code and tests it. On BTC since 2020 asking for twice the usual volume removed more than half of the trades and cut the drawdown, at the cost of some return, and neither version came near holding.

## The rule

Many breakouts fail straight away. The bet: a break that comes with heavy trading has more behind it and is more likely to run.

- **Enter** when the close breaks above the high of the previous 20 bars and the volume is more than twice the usual, with half of the free capital.
- **The usual volume** is the average of candles at the same hour of the day, over the last 240 bars — 40 days on 4-hour candles. Crypto trades more at some hours than at others, and this keeps a busy hour from looking special.
- **Exit** when the close falls below the low of the previous 10 bars, or at a −6% loss.

*The recipe as the wizard builds it. The button opens the wizard with these answers.*

## Three steps

1. **Open it.** Press **Open in the wizard** on the card and check the answers: coin, direction and market, candles, how much more volume than usual, how much risk.
2. **Try it.** Press **Fine-tune in the editor**, then **Test on history**. Nothing is saved. Open the line under that button and tick **Compare against random entries** to see whether the breakout beats a coin flip with the same exits.
3. **Keep it.** Save the strategy and press **Run backtest** on its page for the full report.

## What it did on Bitcoin

Dry runs on BTC from 2020-01-01 to 2026-11-01, on 4-hour candles unless the row says otherwise. Holding BTC over the same period made about +980%.

| Setting | Trades | Return | Max drawdown |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| No volume condition | 205 | about +151% | about 30% |
| 1.5 times the usual | 128 | about +144% | about 24% |
| 2 times | 83 | about +107% | about 17% |
| 3 times | 32 | about +27% | about 18% |
| 2 times, daily candles | 9 | about +12% | about 10% |
| 2 times, with the trend filter | 53 | about +68% | about 13% |
| 2 times, the short mirror on futures | 100 | about +11% | about 17% |

Volume did not add money: the plain breakout made the most. It did change the shape. At 2 times the share of winning trades rose from about 37% to about 45% and the drawdown fell from about 30% to about 17%. An average win was about twice an average loss, an average trade made about +1.9% after costs and lasted about six days. Three times left too few trades to judge, and nine trades on daily candles say nothing. Holding is not quite the same bet: the strategy uses half of the free capital and spends part of the time out of the market. One coin and one period, so run it on others.

## What to try next

- **A filter.** In the wizard, **with the bigger trend** cut the drawdown from about 17% to about 13% and the return from about +107% to about +68%. [The trend-filter recipe](https://janorium.com/guides/trend-filter-trading-strategy) explains it.
- **A trailing stop.** In the editor, open **Quick add** in the exit section and pick **Trailing stop by ATR**, and see whether it keeps more of a large move than the 10-bar low does.
- **Quiet before the break.** [The squeeze recipe](https://janorium.com/guides/volatility-squeeze-strategy-backtest) asks for a calm market before the breakout rather than heavy volume during it.
- **More rules around the break.** [The Donchian study](https://janorium.com/articles/donchian-breakout-crypto-backtest) tests breakouts with trend filters, ATR stops, shorts and leverage.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does volume confirm a breakout?

It made breakouts more selective rather than more profitable. On BTC in 2020–2026, at 1.5 and 2 times the usual volume, the share of winning trades went up and the drawdown went down, and the plain breakout still made the most money.

### How much more volume should I ask for?

There is no best number in general. Here 1.5 times kept most of the return and 2 times most of the drawdown cut; 3 times left 32 trades in almost seven years, too few to judge.

### Why compare with the same hour of the day?

Crypto volume has a daily rhythm, so a plain average would call every busy hour unusual. In the editor this condition is the RVOLUME indicator, and its period is yours to change.
